Joy Gregory, who grew up in Buckinghamshire, is a British artist who was born to Jamaican parents.
A former student at the Manchester Polytechnic and the Royal College of Art, Gregory's techniques range from digital video installations to Victorian printing. Her work has been broadly exhibited worldwide at venues around the globe and is in major international collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Government Art Collection.
A graduate of Manchester Polytechnic and the Royal College of Art in England. Gregory, is largely concerned with “social and political issues with particular reference to history and cultural differences in contemporary society.” The exhibition Lost languages (2011) at the Impressions Gallery in Bradford featured images from a twenty-year retrospective of Gregory’s work. She utilizes various photographic processes including, digital and analogue print processes. In 2002, Gregory received a NESTA Fellowship, which enabled her the time and the freedom to research for a major piece around language endangerment. According to its website NESTA, a component of the organization’s mission is to “design, test, and scale new solutions to society’s biggest problems, changing millions of lives for the better.” Gregory’s fellowship from the organization allowed her to create the video piece Gomera, which premiered at the Sydney Biennale in May 2010. Gregory is the recipient of numerous awards and has exhibited all over the world showing in many festivals and biennales.
