Earlier in his career Alphonse had an affinity for painting. Noel reportedly created over 600 portraits of royalty including that of Victoria, Empress of Germany and Queen of Prussia, King Edward VII, and other personalities during his day. However, after the publication of his first lithograph in 1827, the artist quit painting to work as a lithographer. Noel was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1855.
